2" lift plates, de cat + Synergy tuning

Post by willh on Sat Aug 20, 2011 12:29 am

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum but wanted to create a thread to document my next couple of mods!

I have already fitted an EGR delete kit and run 205/80/16 tyres. I ripped off my back box the other day after bottoming out through a little river crossing however, so need some more height, and I'm also looking to improve the poke and MPG of my diesel L-Series. I've chosen for some cheapy lift plates from eBay (40mm, not quite 2"), Eibach camber correction pins as I run my car as a daily, de-cat and also a Roverron Synergy tuning module.

From what I have read the lift kit should go on with the standard brake lines but will require some cutting of the inner wing to ensure there's clearance at full extension. The Synergy module piggybacks on to the existing map and has some degree of adjustment to tailor it to your set up and seems to be the most widely recommended "plug and play" tuning solution for this engine (same as in the MG ZR, Rover 45/75 etc so plenty of research history out there!). Their system for the TD4 also gets very good reports and potentially better gains I think. A de-cat has also proven worthwhile to help spooling, although I'm not sure if a new pipe is worth the outlay compared to just removing the stuffing from the existing cat?

I welcome any comments, otherwise I'll update when work is in progress!

i`ve just reduced my lift kit to about 40 mm, lift kits can wear the cv joints a lot and give vibrations at 25-30 mph, never needed the caster pins tho? f/l `s run ok without? just get the wheels tracked after, dont know what happens if you remove the cat? i have a high level rear silencer exiting thro the rear o/s bumper which weighs less and sounds a bit better, think you can run with the rear box removed, just extend the exhaust beyond the bumper to get the gases away, bigger tyres are the best lift kit,

Yeah, my tyres are already maxed out against the lower spring cups! They've given me an inch extra height so with the plates I should hope to be nearly 3" higher than a standard car in the centre of the body. I appreciate that the slightly steeper angle between the diffs and the wheels will increase wear rates on these components, but the long term costs of this will hopefully be outweighed by the short term savings of not smashing bits off the bottom of my car!

The VP37 tuning module from Roverron arrived today, and after an easy fit I've just been out for a blast to adjust up the settings. It's made a pretty healthy difference!

My previous car was a chipped Golf GT TDi and I've had a few big RWD BMWs in my time too, and although the Freelander wouldn't be troubling them it feels a lot more "car" like now and pulls hard under full throttle. There are still adjustments to be made and I am going to turn up the boost some more now to compensate for the extra fuel being delivered, but I will report back soon with any details on the MPG (which if I don't cane it everywhere should improve at mild throttle/cruising!)

I have read that camber correction pins may not be required, so I'm going to fit the plates and get it tracked/aligned after to see what numbers we can hit. This is my daily driver and tyre wear rates + MPG are important so at least if I require the pins to get it sitting right I'll have them to hand! If not required however I can send them back to recoup some cash on this modifying spree...!
