wheels/tyres info

Post by cobarblue on Mon Jun 16, 2008 7:56 pm

Hi Everyone. I want to change the tyres on my xedi. it has 15inch alloys with 195 80x15 tyres that look very skinny. I think i can get away with 215 75x15 without any mods, and would welcome any recomendations you have.
Will it be o.k. to keep the spare as a 195 80x15 as it has good tread, and could i use it in an emergency just to drive a short distance if i have to? Thanks, Phil.

Hi Phil you should be able to go to 215/80/15 without any probs on any FL

You should be able to get a short distance on any size spare but the bigger the difference the more likely you are to start knackering diffs etc or causing things to get dangerous.

You can gurantee your short distance in emergency will be 300 miles on a bank holiday when you have an big meeting that cant be missed. pale

I have 205 80 R16 Kuhmo MT Fitted to mine. I do however have 35mm wheel spacers so you may find they touch the bottom of the spring mount if you don`t have spacers fitted.

Thanks how do you find that size of tyre is it gd off road? Ive gone for the cheaper option of kingpin tracker MT's. Found one person how says they only just rub when on full lock !! What engine are you running?

It s not to bad on road but being a MT doesn`t act as well as a road tyre.
The engine in my Freelander is a TD4.

Ok, while on the subject.I currently have 215/75/15 Goodyear AT/R's fitted with a 2" lift. Although it is lifted it still looks about same hight as a stock Freelander when parked side by side, although the lift is evident from the gap between the tyres and arches. I don't want to change the Goodyears just yet as they've only had around 3k on them and are virtually like new. I will, however, be seeking a larger alternative, possibly with a more aggressive tread. I also have a set of 16" alloys with crap tread. So I may lean more towards replacing these to use as a second set of wheels for off roading rather than damage my O.Z. racing wheels. So I suppose (finally he gets to the point) what I am asking is what is the tallest 15" and 16" tyres to go for ?

I have 205/80/R16 dont think u could go much more the clearence is fine on the suspension but is very close to the wheel arch around a 1/2-3/4 of an inch clearence. There is a pic of mine Titled (They Fit) on the forum, dont think u could get i taller tyre on her. Hope this helps. P.S can get full lock with no rubbing.

best stick with all terains if you have a manual box, you get to much grip with mud terains and then you need to slip clutch more and unless you can spin the wheels, the tc doesn`t work, cant say for auto box, smelly clutch = a fair bit of worry till you open the windows, bfg`s tend to drum at speed as well, not to bad? can still hear the wife!
